The day gets shorter, the air gets crispy and cold and to no one’s surprise your skin feels different, too. Somewhat drier to be more specific.
Wonder why?
Well, there are quite a few reasons. The main one being the dry & cold weather which makes the water of your skin’s surface evaporate faster (Lamb 2018). That leads to a dry, lifeliess and prone to flaking skin ???? Not a pretty sight, a?
But, chin up, there are plenty of things that you can do to make things better…
To make this read easier, we’re going to separate the article into 3 sections so that we can give you the most relevant advice according to the 3 different skin areas we’re covering (Face, Scalp & Body).
We start with Face.
Hydrate. Inside & out. We sound a bit like your granny but don’t forget to drink your recommended 8 glasses of water per day and more. If you’re not a big fan of water, go for herbal tea, add some lemon & a sweetener and you’re sorted. Then, do not forget your hydrating cream. Apply a layer before you go out and you’re ready to hit the town.We love QQ Natural’s Vegan BB Hydrating Day Cream with Foundation Effect because it’s like a 2 in 1, you get a hydrating cream and a foundation in one jar…beautiful, nourishing and sustainabe : )
But if you’d like to enhance your facial colour a bit more, we have you covered, try out the Zao Vegan Organic Silk Foundation. Cruelty-free choice for a dazzling look and that’s not even the best part…
From 23rd November till 30th November you can get all Zao products with a 20% off : )
When the time to take off your make-up comes, go for a gentle makeup remover like coconut oil, olive oil or almond oil. These are not only natural but also moisturising and zerowaste (if purchased in glass containers). Apply a little bit on a reusable cotton makeup remover pad, rinse with cool water and you’re ready to head to Dreamland : )
But…what about the lips?
There the opportunities are endless. You can use the same oils as for removing your make-up (coconut, almond and olive oils) but if you’re out roaming around town, then you probably don’t have these in hand. In that case you can opt for a zerowaste lip balm like Morava’s one with lime & mint. If you’re not a big citrus fan, you can check out Zoya’s Sweet one or make your own one. Check out our recipe for an irresistable lip balm here
Enough about your pretty face for now, time to move on to…
The Scalp
Choose a sulphate and paraben-free shampoo. This small step will make miracles for your hair, detangling the unruly ends and smoothening the surface. You can also put some olive oil on the ends for an hour-two before washing. You know our zerowaste and locally made principles, so we’re always happy to opt for one of QQ Natural’s liquid shampoos or Morava’s shampoo bars.
If you’re based outside of Bulgaria, check out something zerowaste & local. And don’t forget the hair conditioner & mask. We have found an all in one product-QQ Natural’s Vegan Hair Mask & Conditioner.
Even if your hair dryes out quickly PLEASE do not leave your house with wet hair. You’re not only putting your health at risk but you might also get an itchy and flaky scalp because damp skin chaps as water evaporates of your skin’s surface faster, leaving it dry and vulnerable to the cold winter air.
Now that we’ve sorted out the scalp, it’s time for number 3…
The Body
Same as with your scalp, your body is also vulnerable to the cold air so do not forget to MOISTURIZE after you take a hot shower. Why? Because when hot water evaporates from your skin’s surface quite quickly this leads to cracks which expose the skin nerves to the cold air and that causes eczema. Not a fun add-on to your New Year’s party, right?
But don’t panic…
As long as you dry your skin out straight after your shower and you apply a moisturiser, it’s all going to be ok. Just remember to opt for a body cream/moisturiser instead of a body lotion as body lotions are not thick and hydrating enough. Heavy fragrances are also a big no-no for the skin as they tend to irritate it during the cold winter months. This year we’re in love with Zoya’s Gentle Hand & Body Cream Vanilla Pudding. It’s delicate, compact and you can bring it anywhere-from a trek in the mountains to a business meeting : )
Bonus Tip!
Apply some essential oil on your body before showering, this will hydrate your skin and protect its barrier. There are plenty of options but we recommend coconut, tea tree or argan oil.
What about exfoliating then?
If you have dry skin, it’s better not to exfoliate during the winter months. If your skin is not dry, then we’d recommend to do it once a week as the skin barrier is thinner during this time of the year.
This is all from us for now, we know it became a bit too long but we wanted to make sure we’ve shared all info that we had : )
