Hi lovelies,
This is my second publication about being zero-waste at home after my first one about eliminating kitchen waste.
Today I am going to focus on one very special room for me…the bathroom.
I also call it the temple because that is the place where I become humble, it’s quiet, I can only hear the sound of the running water which leaves me in peace with my thoughts.
I love beautiful cosmetic products with different, exotic aroma, hence my favourite soap bar is with Eucalyptus and Mint, from the Bulgarian brand QQ Natural. I got it package-free which is a great option if you’re planning to use it soon. If not, you’ll have to buy it wrapped in a thin film of plastic and paper so that its aroma can be preserved for longer. My soap dish also has a long history, my mum discovered it a few years ago at the vet’s while we were buying a comb for our dog. Yep, my soap dish is a dog comb. I’ve decided to use it as a soap dish because it doesn’t collect water, any small soap leftovers are washed like a piece of cake and there is no risk of breakage, plus it looks different ; )
On my small dressing table I’ve put some other useful items such as my bamboo toothbrush and its bamboo travel case, both from the Bulgarian brand Nordics. I love supporting local brands which offer sustainable good quality products and I’m very happy that my bathroom is full of such!
I often get questions about how do I take care of my bamboo toothbrush- I always dry it up with a towel after use, I store it directly on my dressing table and not in a porcelain mug so that it doesn’t rot. I also don’t apply any pressure while brushing which helps me to preserve the bristles for longer. And after two months have passed, I compost my toothbrush following these simple steps.
Next to my toothbrush is my “toothpaste” which is more like a tooth powder because of its dry consistency. I’ve been using it for almost 3 years, it’s made of white clay, baking soda, a little bit of salt and essential oil. The full recipe is here. Like with everything else that I do, I also asked for an expert’s opinion about it and my dentist confirmed that it’s a pretty good one, even better than the conventional ones because it doesn’t contain any preservatives!
The bottle which you see right next to it is my favorite shampoo of the Bulgarian brand QQ Natural again which comes in a glass bottle and is made of fuller’s earth and lemongrass, suitable for fine hair, prone to greasiness. They also have one more shampoo with lavender, for colored and dry hair. Next to my shampoo is my 2 in 1 hair mask & conditioner
This product saves me the need of buying two separate ones (one hair mask & one conditioner) and makes my hair smooth and shiny. 2 birds with 1 stone ; )
In the cupboard behind me I keep some other useful items such as:
My dry shampoo which is basically corn starch which I apply on my roots on the days when I’m rushing to do a billion-zillion things and I somehow cannot make it to the shower on timе.
I also keep a little bit of olive oil which I use for my ends, it makes them soft and easy to comb, the longer I leave it on for, the better. I usually apply it in the evening and put a shower cap on so that it stays overnight and then I wash my hair in the morning so that it is soft and shiny during the day.
BEAR in mind that you shouldn’t apply olive oil to your roots, otherwise that’s going to make them greasy.
I also have my body scrub in a repurposed cheese container. The scrub includes: coffee leftovers, melted coconut oil and sugar. I love it because it makes my skin super smooth and it improves the blood circulation and a bonus effect is that it reduces cellulite. If you are not a fan of coffee or DIY recipes, do not worry, QQ Natural also have a body scrub in a glass jar.
And we get to my last item in the cupboard- my foot scrubber. Keeps my soles soft and well-exfoliated, once every week I try out different scrub recipes.
What products do you have in your bathroom? I’d love to learn how you have reduced your waste in this intimate room?
Yours,
Vera
